Cherokee County is located in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains and is home to Tahlequah, OK. Tahlequah is the capital to 2 federally recognized Cherokee tribes, The United Keetoowah Band and Cherokee Nation. Located around Tahlequah are many historical sites featuring the history of the Cherokee and Keetoowah tribes as well as Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River. Northeastern State University is located in downtown Tahlequah. N.S.U. is the oldest school of higher learning in Oklahoma and spans over 200 acres with campuses in Muskogee, OK and Broken Arrow, OK.
